This song has impacted me because it reflects what is happening to the society and gives me a better understanding of how people communicate nowadays. It got me thinking of how and why people are not speaking so frequently nowadays and also made me wary to not to be like the type of people reflected in this song. I think that the main cause of people not talking to each other so often nowadays is because technology is improving and in most people’s eyes, everything to them is just work and businesses.
I particularly like the phrase: “People talking without speaking / People hearing without listening / People writing songs that voices never share”. The irony in these three sentences clearly shows the inability of people communicating with one another and people unable to love each other. In this song, this person said that “silence like a cancer grows”. I agree to this statement totally because as time goes on and people are not communicating with each other, they would be hostile and feels awkward if they want to communicate again, as they would already lose trust in each other. Therefore, in my opinion, I think that we need to start talking to each other more often lest one day, people would really be doubtful to each other.
I think that this song is a really meaningful one and I would recommend it to my friends and I also hope that more people could appreciate it. You could listen to the song by clicking on the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhdGkZ6Fngw .The lyrics are as follows:
“Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence”
